It is our unending pleasure to tell you that this years headline event at the TVIFF 2023 Closing Ceremony will be "An Evening with Robson Green, interviewed by Mark Benton". Robson will take us on a journey through his illustrious career from his “Soldier Soldier” days that led to the Simon Cowell produced “Robson and Jerome” hit singles, all the way through to his current “Weekend Breaks” TV show which he’s recently filmed an episode of in Saltburn. Interviewed by Teesside acting legend Mark Benton, Robson will also share stories of his career highs and lows, the many inspirational people he’s worked with over the years and how it felt to leave and later return to his beloved North East. Hosted by Middlesbrough’s own Lucia Rovardi, the night also includes the presentation of awards to the winning filmmakers that’ve submitted their work to the festival and had their films screened over the course of the festival, it will feature the final of the Tees Valley’s Got Talent monologue contest and will end with a revelation of future TVIFF plans by Festival Director, Michael Luke. 0 An Oscar Winner Comes to TVIFF 2023!
The Tees Valley International Film Festival and ARC welcome Oscar and BAFTA winning film producer David Parfitt to take part in an in intimate evening of conversation in which he will discuss the many highlights of his illustrious career including taking the Academy Award home in 1998 for his work on Shakespeare in Love. Originally from Sunderland, David set up his first production company with Kenneth Branagh in 1987 and went on to produce such classics as Gangs of New York, The Madness of King George and The Father. David was Chairman of BAFTA from 2008 to 2010 and is currently chair of North East Screen so nobody is better placed to advise local filmmakers on all of the support and funding that’s available to them. Hosted by Teesside’s Jessica Robson, the show will be in a relaxed, interview style format and will finish with an open and honest audience Q&A. So whether you’d like to hear what life’s like among the A list movie stars in Hollywood or if you’d like to ask what support and funding is available to amateur filmmakers, Oscar winning film producer David Parfitt will be happy to tell all. From Teesside University to Game of Thrones to starting the award winning film production company Candle & Bell, the Tees Valley International Film Festival welcomes Maria Caruana Galizia to ARC to tell us about her journey in the world of film and TV. Having faced rampant sexism as a young producer in a notoriously male dominated industry, Maria’s love for the artistry of cinema helped her battle through. In her own words “I am a woman and I’m creative. I can hold a camera, I can edit and produce and I can handle money and run a company. There’s space for me. The stories I want to tell, people want to hear”, and now Marie comes back to Teesside to tell her story and to advise others on how they too can forge a great career behind the camera. The evening also includes a screening of Maria’s British Independent Film Award nominated short film “A Six and Two Threes”, which was filmed in Stockton before ending with an in depth Q&A. 0 Britain's Tallest Man Gets TVIFF 2023 Gala Screening!
Big Smooth charts the life of Neil Fingleton, a man who grew up in Durham and carried on growing until he, at the height of seven feet and six inches tall, became Britain’s tallest living person. This moving documentary is a loving tribute to a remarkable man who embraced his unique physicality and went on to become a professional basketball star in America, before taking up acting, starring in 417 Ronin, Doctor Who, X-Men and most notably as Mag, the fearsome giant in classic TV Series Game of Thrones. This TVIFF gala screening will be the first time Big Smooth has been shown in a cinema since it’s premieres in the UK and US in April. Middlesbrough born actor, Stephen Uppal, returns to his beloved Teesside to tell you all about his journey from the streets of Teesside to the West End stage as a lead actor in History Boys, onto our TV screens as Rav Roy in Hollyoaks, across the Atlantic to Los Angeles where his career moved towards writing and film production and back to England to oversee the making of a major drama series he wrote that will go into production next year. Through sharing stories of the wonderful experiences, inspiring people and many challenges he faced along the way, Stephen will demonstrate how making yourself more than just an actor will increase your opportunities and possibly take you on an entirely different creative path to the one you intended travelling down. The event will also include a showing of “Abe”, a celebrated short film which Stephen wrote, produced and acted in, as well as an open and honest Q&A session. The Tees Valley International Film Festival brings you a gala world premiere of Teesside filmmaker Paul Suggitt’s “Eddy – My Universe”. Charting the life of Hartlepool’s Eddy Ellwood, this documentary delves into the life of the five time Mr Universe Bodybuilding Champion. Eddy’s early years as doorman in the pubs and clubs of Teesside lead him into the dark world of enforcement that gave him a name very different from that of the successful gym owner he is known as today. The film also documents Eddy’s legal battle with the UK government after his refusal to close his gym under Covid lockdown regulations led to him being hit with a £56000 fine. To make this world premiere even more special, Eddy Ellwood and Paul Suggitt will be in attendance to take part in an in depth interview and an open and honest Q&A session after the screening to tell you even more about Eddy’s remarkable life and the making of this equally remarkable documentary. TVIFF was in attendance at Flok in Middlesbrough for the open casting of "Kazzy" a new featurefilm to be directed by Hartlepool's Paul Suggitt and shot in Teesside. The evning was a roaring success and strengthens our belief that the Tees Valley is an absolute hotbed of talent and that the Tees Valley Creative Revolution is just around the corner. A great afternoon was had by all at Newcastle Film Club today as a wonderful group of creatives gathered to watch Darlington filmmaker Jim Campbell give a talk on his work, his plans and his passions. TVIFF were made to feel very welcome by Newcastle Film Club President Samantha Castro and VP Stuart Hunter. We look forward to collaborating with NFC in the future.
